Voluminous, Textured Waves: Hair Tutorial

Thank you to Got2b for sponsoring this post.

I've been using Got2b's brand new Volumaniacs line to extend my usual style of natural, texture-heavy waves, and the results have been ace. I stick to my usual hair-washing schedule of about once a week with a blonde shampoo and a conditioner (alternating every week with a deep conditioning hair mask), and a sea salt spray for that just-off-the-beach look, and then follow the steps below. It's a great base style for a messy ponytail, a braid crown, half-top knot...the list goes on.

If you have any questions about the process or any other hair questions, ask away!

Skip A Wash

Last year, I skipped out on making New Year’s resolutions. I've already made a few for 2017, so this year I'm skipping out on something else: washing my hair! I partnered with Dove for the Dove Hair #SkipAWash Challenge. I'm a dry shampoo fanatic and use it almost every day. Dove just released a new line of dry shampoo, and after trying it, I want to see if you guys are down to #SkipAWash and reach for dry shampoo instead!

I snapped a few photos showing you my standard application process for aerosol dry shampoo: I start with a dramatic side part and apply the dry shampoo there to give the underside of my hair some lift and volume. Next, I massage it in with my fingers to help absorb the natural oils that develop in the days after a hair wash. Finally, I comb or brush it out to make sure the product is dispersed evenly.

If I'm going out, whether it's to coffee or to a New Year's Eve party, I like to add a little extra touch—today, I went with a simple twist on either side of my center part for a quick, bohemian-inspired half-up do.

If you have never tried to #SkipAWash, I highly recommend it giving it a go. Less washing is better for your hair, saves you time, and Dove's dry shampoo even works as a sweet-smelling hair perfume. What could be better?

All Things Hair

I get a lot of questions about my hair on a regular basis, so I thought I'd put together a little post with every little detail any of you have ever wondered. My hair story starts way back in the day. I've always grown my hair as long as possible, until I chopped it once in tenth grade. I let it grow long again after that, until two years ago when I decided to try something new.

I've been lucky enough to have select few hairstylists to remain loyal to.  My mom used to take my sister and I to Leslie at Hair Masters in Seattle, then pretty quickly after we moved we found our family hair guru, Stephanie, who somehow managed to do a perfect job on all seven of us. Leaving her was one of the reasons I was nervous about moving to a new city, but once I met Emily Roberts, I never had another hair care in the world.

I've been going to Emily for three years now; I wouldn't have trusted anyone else to chop it all off two years ago. By this time, she just gets me, and I don't have to do much explaining for her to know exactly what look I'm going for.

Hair Maven

Emily's from St. Paul and has been doing hair for five and a half years. She has the cutest little six-year-old, Frankie, with the lead singer of Ripper (I know, I can't even handle the cool) and some of the prettiest tattoos I've ever seen. Random fact: the whole first year I went to her, I thought her name was Sunny—at the salon she started at, there was already another gal named Emily, so she had to change her name for the duration of her employment!

Hair Cut

Since my major chop two years ago, we've nailed down a new style that is a perfect balance between fun and functional. Emily cuts a soft v-shaped perimeter with long, pointy layers. Another key element: she cuts it with a center part, so I can flip it around and don't have to be committed to having my part on one side of my head. Back in my mermaid hair days, I loved having soft, feathery ends to add a little more whimsy to my look, but now that it's shorter, we go for blunt ends while maintaining a ton of texture in the layers. Emily convinced me the "shredded ends" trend is officially out.

Hair Care

I'm a nighttime shower person, and use Living Proof's "No Frizz" shampoo and conditioner before adding Moroccanoil's Pure Argan oil to the ends of my towel-dried hair. In the morning, curl most of my head using the clip on a 1.25" curling iron, curl a few pieces just using the wand sans clip, and then spend a few minutes messing it up with my fingers or a wide-tooth comb. I discovered one of my all-time favorite products thanks to Emily—Oribe's Dry Texturizing spray. It doesn't come cheap, but the price is well worth the results. This product or any dry shampoo spray is also the key to my relaxed, wavy curls.

This should cover just about everything, but if you have any more questions, let me know in the comments! Thanks to Emily and HAUS Salon for always taking the best care of me and my mane.
